The Cattail Commons Co-op (CCC) is an "umbrella" co-operative at Dancing Rabbit, that provides a structure that helps co-ops form. These co-ops can then utilize centralized billing and tax preparation through Cattail, simplifying life for everyone and reducing redundant bureaucracy in our alternative economic system. This way DR members and residents receive a single unified quarterly bill and work credits for one co-op can be applied to any part of a person's bill. See Getting Your Needs Met for a list of costs for these co-ops and various other things at DR.
Some co-ops current existing under the Cattail umbrella are:
Village Commons Co-op (VCC)
The VCC is a catch-all co-op that covers a variety of basic services utilized by all, or almost all, of the people at DR. It is the only co-op that is mandatory in that everyone living at DR must join it and pay dues. Because of this, we try to keep things as affordable as possible. VCC fees currently cover:
- Village Grounds keeping: landscaping, path and pond maintenance, village fruit trees, etc.
- Land Management: prairie and tree planting, erosion control, fence maintenance, tractor maintenance, etc.
- Decision Making and Land Trust Management
- Recycling and "Waste" Disposal
- Common House Maintenance and Supplies
- Other Odds and Ends: first aid kit, communal tools, subscription to the local paper, etc.
Shower Co-op
For people living at DR who do not have showers in their own homes the Shower Co-op provides shower facilities in the Common House as well as outdoor solar showers (available during the summer).
Humanure Co-op
For people living at DR who do not have their own human waste disposal system the Humanure (aka Humey) Co-op provides an outhouse and two indoor "outhouses" as well as compost bins for creating humanure compost. As well as a basic fee to cover supplies and maintenance, co-op members do a rotation emptying buckets into the compost bins. One can also use the compost bins without using the other facilities (eg if you have your own outhouse) for a small fee with no rotational chores.
Howling Coyote
A phone co-op with two phone lines in our common house. Most people at DR have phones in their own homes but some choose to use the phone co-op.
Digital Coyote
Digital Coyote provides .5 MB/sec DSL internet access and basic office space in the Common House for people with laptops (note: desktops are not allowed because of higher electrical power consumption). Some areas at DR have wireless access but we do not yet have a village-wide wireless system.
